Welcomed to the Crewcut family are the new franchise operators in Kaitaia: Matthew and Joyce. This power duo shows that you don’t have to be working long in the trade to run a lawn and garden business successfully.

Servicing the region known as the gateway to the far north or to 20+ iconic bays and beaches for 7 months now, Matthew and Joyce go above and beyond offering lawn mowing and weed eating to Kiwi households. Having previously worked on diggers for a housing company, they take with them their valuable experience in customer service – just this time, trimming and clearing the lawns instead of digging through them.

Using their preferred tools, the Walker Ride On Mower and Husqvarna weed eater, they make sure they pay attention to details and that their customers get what’s required of them as they believe these are the desirable skills they have in the business. With a son who helps them every now and then, they also get to go on fishing, and diving, and still have time relaxing especially from a big day out mowing lawns.

At present, aside from the business side, Matthew and Joyce have learned the importance of maintaining your equipment so as to avoid machinery breakdown on the job. Knowing a few more things now, they’re confident to leave a word of advice for people who may also just be new to the business as they were seven months ago, saying “Listen to your customers but also be honest with your customers”.

Change is the only thing that’s constant and the same can be said for Joe. Hailing from Kaikohekohe, Joe has joined Crewcut for nine months now and his reasons are something many can identify with.

Less stress, more flexibility, and a desire to move and be outdoors. These are what made him want to take that step and start his own lawn and garden business. Rightly so, a Crewcut franchise provides you with those and more.  

At present, his company offers lawn mowing, weed eating, hedge trimming, spraying, and edging services to Rawene, Opononi, Omapere through to Kaikohe and surrounding areas. During school holidays and after-class hours, he is also helped by his teenage sons, making it almost a fun, family affair.

Ultimately, Joe prides himself on his communication skills, friendliness, and ability to pay attention to details. Since joining Crewcut, he has also learned the importance of preparation and looking after your gear. As a pro tip, he shares how you can thrive should you want to succeed in this business, saying, “Mow it like it’s your own.”

Having worked as a youth counselor before, now he’s into coaching rugby, mowing his own lawn, and kicking it back with the whanau during his downtime off work.

Lawn care can be just another chore to add to your list, so why not add it to someone else’s instead? Our Northland Regional Managers Andrew and Sanette can take care of the hard work along with leading a team of operators throughout the region. 

This dynamic duo used to travel across Tauranga with their ride-on and push mowers to take care of lawn mowing and the occasional light gardening tasks. In 2021, they decided to move to the Winterless North, bringing with them their passion and expertise for the trade to lead the growing team. They are experts at their craft and pride themselves on 100% effort for a job well done.

Both Andrew and Sanette feel their eye for detail and dependability is what has their loyal customer base coming back for more. 

While it’s clear to see they’re experts at what they do, they haven’t always been in lawn care. Before their franchise, they owned a refrigeration company. After Andrew underwent an operation, he needed work that would allow flexibility – and lawn care was the answer. 

When they aren’t helping their customers with picture-perfect lawns, they’re spending time with their family. They love to go out on the water, catch the odd fish, and hang out with the kids. 

Andrew and Sanette have had to overcome a few challenges, but they are happy with where they’re at. They also recommend that others who may like to try lawn care put in the hard work and understand that it takes consistency.

Tracey & Zark Newman joined Crewcut in 2020 to provide a top-quality lawn care service in Kerikeri, Kaitaia, and Paihia. They take great pride in delivering convenient lawn care services, including lawn mowing, weed eating, hedge trimming, and taking green waste bags.

The pair joined Crewcut as Tracey wanted a new challenge, to work outdoors, and to be her own boss. Crewcut ticked all those boxes. Previously, she had worked in admin, as a stay-at-home mum, and as a horse trek guide.

Tracey and Zark pride themselves on their friendliness, attention to detail, and drive to do well. Tracey, who takes on the majority of the work, has also enjoyed learning the craft of lawn mowing, particularly with her Husqvarna and Walker tools of the trade.

When she’s not travelling across Kerikeri and beyond to help her clients, you can find her caring for her children, exercising, and exploring the North.

After working alongside friends and family in lawn mowing businesses, Peter from Kerikeri decided to go out on his own and joined Crewcut in 2020. He had previously worked as a chef and barista, but the significant career change was one Peter couldn’t be happier to make.

He enjoys hands-on work, being outside, and the opportunity to expand his business as much as he likes. Whether you live in Kerikeri, Paihia, Opua, Russell, Kawakawa, or surrounding areas, Peter can’t wait to assist with your lawn care needs.

Ethan has been working for automotive retailer Repco for five years prior to joining the franchise group. He eventually found that working in retail was getting a bit stressful and he was missing the outdoors, so when a run came up for sale, he grabbed the opportunity.

True to his retail background, in just a matter of months, he was able to increase his lawn list to cover 80 customers. He says he is quite happy at this level and wants to keep it this way so that it remains manageable for him. Right now, he works mostly by himself but sometimes gets his partner Samantha to help during her days off. “She helps me catch up if I’m a bit behind from bad weather and stuff,” Ethan shares.

Being always friendly to customers and spending extra time to pay attention to detail are qualities that have brought him to this level of success early in the business. When asked what he learned after joining Crewcut, he said it is here where he realised that retail isn’t for him. He said he wouldn’t trade this newfound lifestyle change for anything.

When he’s not on his ride-on mower, you’ll find him off-roading, tinkering with mechanics, and getting the race car out when he can. It seems like Ethan is leading a life (and work) on wheels, isn’t it?

His advice to newcomers in the business? “Don’t grow your clients too fast. It can become a bit overwhelming the first few times you get behind.” He suggests taking it slow and steady, but it’s completely up to you as long as you love what you do.
