Vaughan started his journey with Crewcut in November of 2021, after an extensive career as a motorcycle salesman and engineer. The transition from engineering to lawn mowing was prompted by a desire for change. Vaughan found Crewcut through the previous owner of the franchise who decided to sell. Recognising the value and reputation of the Crewcut brand, he seized the opportunity to join the team.

Vaughan’s main goals for his business are simple yet fulfilling: to be happy and make money. He runs his operations solo, which allows him to maintain a personal touch in every aspect of his work. His best skill in the business is being a people person, which enables him to build strong relationships with clients and ensure their satisfaction. Vaughan approaches every job with dedication and care, treating every property as if it were his own.

When he’s not busy taking care of clients’ lawns and gardens, Vaughan enjoys indulging in his hobbies, which include fishing, motorcycle riding, and speedway racing. These activities provide him with a sense of adventure and relaxation, allowing him to unwind after a day’s work.

Since joining Crewcut, Vaughan has learned that the lawn care business is heavily dependent on the weather, which can add pressure to his schedule. Despite this challenge, he remains committed to delivering the best service to his clients.

Waihi's very own Jatinder worked as a professional driller before getting into the lawn care and garden game. The desire to choose his own hours and be outdoors attracted him to the idea and eventually made him jump on the opportunity to buy a Crewcut franchise.

After just two months, Jatinder sees the benefit of working for a company with a great reputation. He thinks it’s awesome and advises anyone who shares his desire for a career change to lawn mowing to consider Crewcut as the best option.

Together with his Walker Ride-on Mower and Stihl tools, Jatinder provides Waihi and Waihi Beach customers with services such as lawn mowing, gardening, spraying, and hedge trimming. At work, he is aided by his employees and takes great pride in their excellent customer service and clear attention to detail. But when not working or growing his business as much as possible, Jatinder loves spending his newfound free time with his family.

Not your ordinary power duo, Todd and Lisa are the newest and welcome addition to the Crewcut family. Starting their own lawn care venture servicing Paeroa, Thames and Ngatea areas, they’re excited more than ever to put the pedal to the metal and be part of the Kiwi households.

Before joining Crewcut, Todd did landscaping and rural fencing. However, they wanted to have their own business in the outdoors that’ll enable them to have a more flexible lifestyle. Todd shares, “Crewcut appealed to us as we could earn from day one under a well recognised brand.”

Working together towards a common goal, Todd and Lisa want to grow their customer base to about 60+ customers. Given their partnership and excellent customer service and with the help of their Husqvarna ride-on and line trimmer and Lawn Master mower, this goal is as realistic and possible in the near future.

Todd and Lisa who both enjoy passion for rural life, breeding tropical and exotic beef cattle and running their lifestyle block may have realized that there’s a lot involved in a start-up business. But that is not a hindrance at all. Todd adds, “Do your homework – anything is possible with hard work and determination.”

After two years of working as an employee with Crewcut, Tauranga-born David recently jumped on the opportunity to become a franchisee himself, proving that Crewcut was a good fit for him as a hardworking and motivated person.

Before Crewcut, David was a Youtuber and had worked at New World and Waihi Pizza. He eventually realised though that he preferred working outdoors to being cooped up. Starting the new venture in the Waihi region where he is now based, David found out there's a lot more to lawn work than he first thought. But good thing, he enjoys the art of mowing and maintaining lawns, while also staying fit and active.

David's goal for his Crewcut franchise is not only to grow the business but also to interact with a growing list of clients and provide them with a well-maintained lawn that anyone would aspire to have. During his free time, when he is not driving his Masport Mower or working his Stihl weed eater & blower, he enjoys spending time with his wife and family, shooting hoops on the basketball court, and playing video games. 

On his advice for anyone thinking of starting their own franchise, David shared how important it is to make sure you enjoy the work before making the jump. As for himself, he loves his job and it shows in his work. His services include lawn mowing and weed eating. Customers in the Waihi region looking for a lawn care expert will be happy to have him.

Alisa and Bernard took on the busy but fulfilling role of Regional Managers in 2013. Alisa grew up in Te Puke while Bernard is a Tauranga boy through and through. They have done a raft of different ventures, the most recent was managing a holiday park in Papamoa for over six years. The couple obviously loves working together!

Bernard specialises in developing lawn and garden packages for commercial customers, shopping complexes, retirement villages, gated communities, churches, businesses, larger properties and lifestyle blocks.

John is the local Crewcut operator that looks after Tirohia, Matamata, and the outskirts of Morrinsville in the Piako area. Along with his lawn mowing, he also does some garden work for the clients that need it, which includes hedge trimming and basic pruning. In his trailer, he carries around his Walker ride on, Rover Pro-cut push mower, and Stihl tools for everything else that he needs including blower and weed eater. 

Before the move to join Crewcut John spent 17 years dairy farming with his wife around Morrinsville and more recently in Walton. John didn’t start his career in agriculture, he spent 6 years in the Navy and left the Navy to work in electronics, repairing cellphones and managing a service department. Now that he’s with Crewcut his goal is to grow the business, give great customer service and run his business successfully. With a bit of help from his wife on the computer side of things, his business runs as smooth as it can.

When he’s not busy maintaining his clients’ properties, he is focusing on the renovation of his own house which is going under a decent amount of expansion. John also likes to make sure that at least one day in the weekend is dedicated to a game of golf which he will play on courses all around the area.

John finds that common sense is a great skill to have, which helps with any problem solving he may come across. He also finds that ensuring your communication skills are strong is extremely important in this industry. If you’re open to communication with clients you will be able to solve your customer’s problems.  John also finds that good time management helps in making sure he can deliver a great service. This time management works in with understanding the grass you’re working with. In his case, with his run quite spread out, understanding the grass in different areas is important which might lead him to the need for different equipment in each area.

A bit of advice to anyone who is considering the lawn mowing industry is to understand the scope of work you’ll be taking on with the different services you offer and to also be aware of the distance you travel daily. When he started with Crewcut the physical side was surprising too. There were parts of the body that obviously hadn't been used that often that were feeling it now. John enjoys the feedback he receives from his clients and delivering a professional, friendly and affordable service.
