Quite a jack of all trades who loves to push himself and try different things, Frederick from Manawatu has joined the Crewcut family for 10 months now to take on his next challenge: a lawn mowing operator servicing the areas of Woodville, Paihiatia, Eketahuna, and Dannivirke.

Frederick, who previously worked on property maintenance, arborist projects, and landscaping, made the jump to lawn mowing as he enjoys working outdoors and taking satisfaction in the end product. Goal-centric, he wants to see growth in the business by acquiring over 100 clients in two years. With great physical fitness, pride in his work, attention to detail, a friendly approach, and a partner who helps out with gardening and some lawns, this goal doesn’t seem far-fetched at all.

Prior to joining Crewcut, he worked in a government department. He made the switch to lawn and garden services because he wanted a more active lifestyle and work-life balance. He intends to grow his customer base in the next two to three years and emphasises that he wants to ensure the quality of his work is maintained while he works towards his business’ growth.

When asked if someone else helps him out with the business, he mentioned that his wife assists him with accounting and gardening work from time to time. The biggest thing he’s learned since joining Crewcut is the ability to constantly change to meet the needs of the clients. Customers would always want different things, and it’s best to always communicate clearly to manage expectations and clarify job scopes.

Mark’s advice to those who are interested in a lawn mowing business is to try to work three to four weeks in the business you wish to purchase prior to buying. He also suggests developing a broad range of skills to gain other income options during quieter times of the year.
