Truck driver Ajay decided it was time for a change in career where he could work outside and live a more active lifestyle. Together with his partner Jasmail, the two joined forces to start their own lawn care and gardening business.

Kevin, based in Tauranga, has been with Crewcut since October 2021. Before joining, Kevin spent over a decade in the flooring industry. Before that, he had a brief stint in retail. After many years of working long hours, Kevin decided to switch to lawn mowing and gardening for more flexible working hours that better suited his family’s needs. With close family already involved in Crewcut, joining the company was an easy decision.

Kevin uses a range of professional tools in his lawn care work. He’s considering offering an eco-friendly service option in the future, using battery-powered tools for clients who prefer a more sustainable approach. This is a goal he’s exploring as he grows his customer base and looks to establish a steady stream of regular clients. 

In his business, Kevin’s wife helps out by managing the admin tasks, allowing him to focus on providing top-quality service on-site. Kevin’s strength lies in his physical fitness, honed from years of hands-on work, and his sharp attention to detail. He also enjoys meeting new people and prides himself on delivering a high standard of service to his clients. 

When not working, Kevin enjoys fishing, playing golf, and spending time with his family and friends. He particularly enjoys watching rugby and hosting barbeques at home. In his work, Mike favours his John Deere Zero Turn and Husqvarna Ride-On lawn mowers and Ryobi weed eater, blower, and edger. He is helped by his wife Cathi, who takes care of the accounts and also takes on the role of expert gardener. The couple wants to grow their business while enjoying the process and the flexible lifestyle. After 10 years of working for a fresh produce company, Matthew eventually had a light bulb moment and decided he wanted to work for himself. Not only that but he also wanted to have more time at home with his wife and their young kids. After seeing an ad on TradeMe, Matthew proceeded to buy his own Crewcut Lawn and Garden franchise, where he has been the proud owner now for over five years.

Matthew's goal is simple: to build a successful business that will also provide the flexibility to spend time with his family. The past few years have taught him a lot about running a small business. While his wife helps out with the admin, Matthew provides ride-on lawn mowing, weed eating, and hedge trimming services, aided by his Walker Ride-on and Husqvarna tools. After moving to Tauranga, Lincoln was looking for a specialist ride-on lawn mowing business and found Crewcut. Starting his new venture, Lincoln promises to do a great job and foster excellent customer service with his customers, whilst enjoying the flexibility of long weekends outside of work with his wife. 

Lincoln is servicing properties in Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, and the surrounding districts. Matika from Tauranga is an enthusiastic learner in the gardening and lawn care business, having just bought his own franchise. As a previous earthworks machine operator, Matika decided to pursue his dream of owning a business while doing something he really enjoys. That brought him to the Crewcut family, excited to get started.

Serving the areas of Brookfield, Otumoetai, and Bethlehem, Matika will work together with his wife, who’ll  mainly help out with bookkeeping. There are already plans to employ additional staff in the future to help with mowing the lawns as the business grows and Matika reaches his goal of having at least 120 clients. Work-life balance is not a myth left to your fantasy as Crewcut operator Marnu has recently found out. Having joined for just six months, he has already learned a few things on the job in regards to work and personal matters.

As it turns out, overworking isn’t necessary to make a decent living. Marnu shares on the biggest thing he has learned since joining Crewcut, “I don’t have to work 80 hours a week to make my fortune.”

Prompted by family and his desire to spend more time with them particularly his dad, Marnu left his job working at a busy construction company. For his free time, he likes staying at home and bonding with the kids. But when it’s crunch time, you’ll find him out in the field—working his Husqvarna and Stihl tools, with a great attention to detail and a sharp focus on his goal to be the biggest Crewcut franchise.

A vision as big as that needs an extra hand or two, which he gratefully gets from his parents. “My father helps out with mowing and day-to-day work while my mother does all books for me,” he narrates.

Francis is a new owner-operator of a Crewcut Tauranga franchise, providing lawn mowing, weed eating, and hedge trimming services in the area. Early into the business, he has found an affinity towards Husqvarna, Stihl, Morrison, and Honda tools to get clients’ properties into their excellent shape.

Before joining Crewcut, he was a diesel mechanic. He joined the team because he wanted to work for himself and be more active. Since making the jump, he has learned more than just how to maintain a healthy lawn; he also found time management skills that help him keep up with all of his responsibilities.

Francis loves fishing as well as jet skiing when he's not working. When he's not out on the water or working hard around town you can mostly find him spending time outdoors with his family.

Having run his own motel in Cambridge for six years, Jarrod from Tauranga was ready for a change. He was looking for something that would give him a flexible lifestyle and would keep him active and fit in the process. In November 2020, he purchased a Crewcut franchise, offering various lawn and garden services throughout Papamoa, Welcome Bay, Mangatapu, and Ohauiti.

Jarrod is the man to see for all your tree pruning, green waste removal, hedge trimming, gardening, weed spraying, prickle spraying, water blasting, and gutter cleaning needs. He has his trusty Testarossa Kohler mower, Masport Contractor mower, Husqvarna line trimmer and electric chainsaw (among other tools) to get the job done, as well as a friendly attitude to impress his customers.

He believes dealing with customers as a motel owner put him in the right position to do right by his Crewcut clients. He is thankful that he is able to relate well to people from all walks of life and thinks this has prepared him for steady growth and building up a good client list. He is aiming for a less-is-more approach, with around 80 valued clients whom he can service regularly.

Jarrod says he’ll be working on the business mostly by himself, but his mother may help at times as she has a wealth of practical knowledge and extremely green fingers. When the working day is over, you’ll find him immersed in his own gardens, cycling, and playing music. He also helps out with his partner’s business, assisting in website stuff, painting, or changing her retail shop around.

He mentions that he didn’t realise how big the Crewcut group in his area was prior to joining, and adds that he has certainly gotten fitter from six months ago when he joined. Now that he’s part of the team, Jarrod is ready to stand out in Tauranga’s suburbs through his specialised services. Originally from Samoa, he moved to New Zealand when he was 17 for a rugby scholarship, spending most of his time playing for Taranaki. He was lucky enough to score a few contracts overseas including Cardiff, Wales and Montauban, France. He considers playing for his home country, Samoa, against Ireland in 2013 as his main career highlight. Unfortunately, his career was cut short with too many concussions and he had to make the tough call to hang up his boots.

With rugby ending, Ice had to think about what else he wanted to do in life. He has always been interested in landscaping and being outdoors, and his background of always keeping fit and staying active aligned well with these. When the opportunity came up to move to the Bay of Plenty mowing lawns, he took it with both hands.

His fiancé, Jen, with whom he’s getting married to in October in Fiji, is on the other end of the phone and handling invoices on his behalf. They have three children together – a six-year-old, a five-year-old, and a three-year-old – who keep them pretty busy all the time when they’re not working. With rugby taking him all over the world, he couldn’t ask for a better place to settle and raise a growing family.

He also mentions that he has enjoyed working with another Crewcut operator, Darryn for the past six months.
