The former sheep and beef farmer thought about joining the crew because he wanted to foray into self-employment and needed a lifestyle change. Seeing Crewcut’s professional attitude towards its clients convinced him to make the move.

His goal is to grow his clientele to make a respectable living and set himself up for retirement while keeping himself fit. This isn’t a remote possibility considering that his partner Louise is always by his side, helping with the accounting and doing a bit of weekend work when needed. He says they are thinking about having her join the business full time in the future.

”Being self-motivated, having pride in what I do and achieving each project, having a good friendly relationship with my customers and making sure they are happy,” David shares when asked about his best skill in the business.

When he’s not busy with work, he says he enjoys time on the water catching a fish or walking the hills in pursuit of wild game. Aside from these, he enjoys time out watching a good game of rugby or having a weekend away with his partner wining and dining.

The biggest thing he learned since joining Crewcut is having patience and knowing that the client is always right. His message to newcomers is to make sure that they consult with an existing franchisee to get a better idea of how the company works.

I joined Crewcut in 2019 and started serving customers in the Rangitikei area. I offer predominantly lawn mowing services for a regular client base and enjoy meeting new customers and discussing their requirements. I also provide hedge trimming, tree pruning and weed spraying along with other more unusual services such as lawn dethatching, broadleaf spraying and waterblasting.

I use mostly petrol powered equipment such as husqvarna line trimmer and blower due to their reliability and ease of use. My Testarossa lawn mower allows me to mow when the conditions may not be the greatest like dewy mornings or after a heavy rain, and my Walker ride-on is ideal due to its reliability and allows me to mow much larger than average lawns.

After a long professional career including 7 years in New Zealand Army and 13 years in Railways ( Kiwi Rail ) I decided that I would try being self-employed for a change of pace. Being Hawkes Bay born and bred I enjoy the outdoors and fresh air. I moved to Manawatu in 1996 during my army service and grew to know the Rangitikei area very well with its great views and many outdoor activities. I chose to join Crewcut because they are a very reputable company that provide a great service while maintaining high professionalism and a strong health and safety etiquette.

As a self-employed business owner it gives me the flexibility to take time off when needed, but also the ability to knuckle down and get the work done when necessary. Self motivation is a big factor in this line of work but also the ability to step back and relax when the conditions like weather are not so favorable. Jason has been with Crewcut since September 2018. Before joining the Crewcut team, he had a 23-year career in the RNZAF. With a desire for a new chapter in his life, Jason decided to leave the military behind and embrace a different path.

For Jason, the allure of working outdoors, savoring the ever-changing weather, and forging connections with people in his community was an irresistible calling.

Working in lawn care has provided Malcolm with a work-life balance that an indoor, nine to five job couldn’t offer him. He gets to play golf in his free time and dabbles in cricket as well.
